Happy songs

A friend of mind is making happy songs about hope and I was trying to help her come up with some good songs to cover. I have to say I always found songs like these schmaltzy and somewhat sinister, maybe because

  • Up up and away
  • Don't worry, be happy
  • Accentuate the positive
  • Put on a happy face
  • Blue skies (by Irving Berlin) and of course
  • The Cuppy Cake Song

Any more suggestions?

The Cuppy Cake Song video -- I was actually cringing not just due to the sugar content but also because I felt it had to end in Linda Blair's head spinning around.

Sing, by the Carpenters, originally written for Sesame Street! "Sing.... Sing a song... Sing out loud... Sing out strong! Sing of good things, not bad... Sing of happy, not sad!" So good, especially when sung in unison by a couple hundred grade schoolers.

"A friend of mind..." You always make me smile, Caterina.

How about:

Touch of Grey
I Need A Miracle (Everyday)

by the Grateful Dead

Not exactly schmaltzy, but definitely sinister.

(Happy Holidays to you and yours)

This brings back memories!

Chaplin's "Smile" I always found incredibly foreboding, not so happy.

Stuck in my head is the phrase "Happy Happy Joy Joy", which I couldn't quite place, so upon Googling, I learned it's from a Ren & Stimpy cartoon I've never seen. Wondering if the phrase Happy Happy Joy Joy had some other etymology, I couldn't help but think of the old gospel fireside song, I've Got the Joy Joy Joy Joy (song) (on wikipedia).

Then I thought of the song written by a classmate in college, which I can't attribute authorship for certain (P. Schurmann??), but it went something like this:

Woke up this morning to a great big dawn,
______________________________________
_________________________________________
"Hello, how are you, what time did you get here" and...

Chorus:

I am so happy,
I am so glad,
it's the dawn of a new day,
and I can't feel sad. (or bad)

There were more gleeful verses to follow, but I regrettably never memorized them and have no recollection. Ah, fun college days...

I think the following songs would make that playlist... weird they are all from the 60's - 70's but still fun!

1) Sly and the Family Stone - Stoned Soul Picnic

2) Theme to the Partridge Family

3) Strawberry Alarmclock - Good Morning Starshine

4) Herman's Hermits - Something is Happening

Hello, world, here's the song that were singin
Cmon get happy!
A whole lot of lovin is what well be bringin
Well make you happy!

We had a dream, wed go travelin together,
Wed spread a little lovin then wed keep movin on.
Somethin always happens whenever were together
We get a happy feelin when were singing a song.

Travlin along theres a song that were singin
Cmon get happy!
A Whole lot of lovin is what well be bringin
Well make you happy! (3X)

a bit late here, but LIFE IS GRAND by Camper Van Beethoven is an excellent optimistic tune:

And life is grand
And I will say this at the risk of falling from favor
With those of you
Who have appointed yourselves to expect us to say
Something darker

And love is real
And though I realize this is not a deep observation
To those of who
Who find it necessary to conceal love or obscure it
As is the fashion

yes, the second stanza is not a complete sentence...
