Pipes

For those of you living under a rock, boycotting TechCrunch after they dissed your startup, or otherwise frankly not giving a damn about a veritable Milestone in The History Of The Internet, the TechDev gang at Yahoo launched Pipes yesterday to much acclaim. Look, nerds like me and you, we've been talking about this Web of Data stuff since well before Web 2.0 was proclaimed, before Mondo 2000, and even before OMNI. For years we've been nuts for the whole Semantic Web enchilada, The Overbrain, Borges' Library and how cool is remixing and sampling way back before Paul's Boutique -- all this stuff that Joe Football flips by using his remote control. But Pipes is getting us closer and closer to nerdvana.

Of course, this is just gross and excessive bombast, because it's really a humble, early stage product in genuine beta that we wanted people to try and give us feedback so we could make it better, not expecting a whirlwind of attention -- which was quite gratifying! I'll not attempt to explain, as its been done much better by others including Tim O'Reilly, whose link is above. Jeremy Zawodny, another Yahoo, has linked to many stories and blog posts about Pipes, but I just wanted to chime in and say wow! and its an honor and a privilege to be working as the roadie for such veritable rock stars as Pasha, Ed, Jonathan and Daniel (with Kevin, Maciej, and Paul singing backup vocals.) You make a Yahoo proud.

Yes! It is a cool new thing. After fiddling for a few minutes I was able to mash three Flickr group RSS feeds together for some Gear/Audio Porn goodness:

You know, it's funny. I took one look at Pipes and knew instantly that you had worked on it.

Nicely done!

Pipes is a "interactive feed aggregator and manipulator"? Huh. How do I explain that to Joe Football? Hopefully the Semantic Web comes with a glossary.

You got Maciej on board!! Well done! Will now giggle a bit at the thought of him doing backup vocals :-)

Oh, and I'll now actually have to read about & try to understand Pipes, since you two are involved with it. Sigh.

Great stuff, Bricksters! :) I was among the geeks pondering on a similar concept of mashing up data. I'm glad to hear this is just a humble beginning.

Hopefully, access to protected content (e.g. via HTTP Basic authentication) will be possible sometime soon.

To get the best of the rest (i.e. non-RSS content), are some web scraping filters among milestones? Perhaps using XPath.

All the best in the future endeavors of Brickhouse.

Cheers!
