- Something's gotta give -- I just can't see how this can be sustained.
- Coffee is supposed to be sweet. If you're drinking flat or bitter coffee, you're a coffee fool.
- This is about the most exciting thing in my life right now," she says, handing out corn cobs to the audience. Also see Kickstart.
- Does anyone know if the Yellow Bikes in Portland are still available? They used to have them in Amsterdam (white) though not anymore, and I rode some in Helsinki (which had striped wheels).

Public yellow bikes are no longer available in Portland. I heard that they were too frequently run off with and that the muni budget couldn't cover the bleed. Shame.
Marcus | February 28, 2006 2:00 PMIf I remember correctly, it was billed more as an ongoing art project or social experiment, than as an official (and funded) program.
More pertinently, they only bought a hundred yellow bikes, with no maintenance or replacement budget. I don't remember there even being any accountability for reinflating the tires; the city just released their new-fledged bicycles into the wild, and no-one seemed particularly amazed that they all got eaten.

Sanat Gersappa | February 28, 2006 10:09 PMThanks for linking to my site! From the traffic, I found your site... and now I know who you are! Wow... co-founder of Flickr!
Burbed | March 1, 2006 3:08 PMI must say, I prefer my coffee "bitter," or more precisely without sugar. I agree that the majority of coffee out there is unpalatable, especially the dunkin doughnuts and gas station variety. I hate to admit it, but I actually frequent Starbucks.
Buttercup | March 2, 2006 2:03 PMThe yellow bikes in Portland didn't last long. None of the free bicycle projects anywhere have ever lasted very long. There's an important truth in there about private property and human nature.
CJ | March 4, 2006 11:22 PM@CJ: Not true. Copenhagen, Denmark has had free-to-use bikes for a decade and they keep coming back every summer. They are advertising sponsored. It's a special make (heavy frame, solid rubber tires, no gears) that's clunky enough that they're not worth stealing but good enough that they'll get around inner city Copenhagen with ease.
The Turkish saying is "Coffee should be as black as hell, as strong as death, and as sweet as love."
Martin | March 8, 2006 9:04 AMI have tried 2 orders of Coffee Fool in the past 3 months and I am now ruined. When I drink my Starbucks I sit there wishing it was a cup a fool.
Tony | March 9, 2006 9:38 AMVictoria had a blue bike program for a while in the late 90's. they slowly disappeared, we know not where.
(maybe to the same place as your christian bok interview? *coughs* sorry ;)

I worked with Amy at MIT for a couple of years. She is truly a force of nature. The project that we worked on was a solar powered water purification system. I also helped her teach a course on low-tech design for dev countries. Amazing what can be done with just a few hundred dollars.
