Every time I read something like this, I realize what a different world I grew up in. No cliques, no gangs, no drugs, just kids, studying, having fun, dealing with growing up (and listened to Iron Maiden too). Wish the whole world was like that, but I guess that's way to utopian a wish. What makes kids behave like that? It can't just be adolescence and peer pressure? If that were the case, it would be universal, but it isn't.

I think that your experience demonstrates that certain things are not universal, but cultural. These kids came from families that were fragmented, with parents in jail, or who had committed suicide themselves. And the culture they're from values the individual over the group (or family, or town) which has the unintended consequence of alienating teenagers, who since they don't feel part of their towns or families, form their own groups (or as you say, cliques or gangs).

The cult of the individual also has as its ultimate hero the outlaw, who answers to no one. This is especially prevalent in the U.S. -- which is why criminals are valorized: Jesse James, Wild Bill Hickok, Dirty Harry, Charles Manson, Hannibal Lecter.

The key is family. In a world where families are not fragmented and there is a built-in support framework, negative situations arise less frequently. And like you say there is something more fundamental, and more ingrained in the culture (your reference to the valorization of criminals is appropriate).

Deepak - all too often in contemporary society, we blame the parents. Try being a working class single mom. I watched my mom do it. She worked two jobs just to make ends meet. It's fucking hard to be around for your kids in those circumstances. My mother loved me dearly but she was just trying to survive. We were all latchkey and i honestly don't know how we made it through. So much of burnout culture comes from that exhaustion due to working class life, having to work night jobs, working hard just to get bare minimum food on the table. And working class kids come from working class parents and the cycles repeat. And it's only gotten worse. I recommend reading "Jocks and Burnouts" - it's an amazing ethnography of how hegemony is created by the tension between the classes in the US. Really really good.

I might just read it. It becomes very difficult to relate to many of the issues I read about in the US, so a little research is in order. It's very easy to talk about the failure of American society, but since I am not sure I understand the underlying pressures that middle class America faces, I will abstain for now.

I grew up in Bergenfield. It's not so bad. Unfortunately, there is some sort of collective subconscious about the suicides that makes itself known every now and then. There are still a great deal of "burnouts" on Washington Ave, but I'm pretty sure the chances of them committing suicide are slim to none. Actually, to be quite honest, the "burnout" culture is emmulated and somewhat even idolized. The jocks are burnouts now. And it would do no good to blame anyone for the current societal situation in town; the kids do it to themselves, they look for it. Foster Village is still there and even now I'm curious about which garage it was.

I also grew up in Bergenfield and I can say I knew the girls personally. However, I was not there quite their age. These two sisters were active in the community - even coached cheering. The term "burn-out" is relative. Disassociated was the key. And no one reached out cause they dressed a certain way and yes did drugs - but so did half the other "main stream" students with plenty of access to Mommy & Daddy's money. It's not isolated to just the loner kids of school. The popular kids and everyone in the burbs is the result of some sort of fast paced life where the parents leave the kids behind. I was a normal, highly involved teen myself - product of very successful and very involved parents. I was what you'd consider the anti-burn out. I went off to college, even grad school where I've earned countless honors. However, the society in Bergenfield than it is in many suburbs around the country where parents are moving faster than the speed of life. I know countless adults like me who are still suffering some sort of depression and never found themselves in adolescence. That episode could have been anyone .. Please spend more time focusing on why we are not socially developing our youth and less time about "politizing" castes of teens. That is NOT the main issue.

this novel tended to repeat itself a lot in the beginning, but i really got into it after a while.
