- I read somewhere that a plastic surgeon could tell if people of Asian descent had grown up in the West or in Asia by how their faces wrinkled as they got older. In Asia the ideal face-in-repose is a placid, Buddha-peaceful face, whereas in the West the ideal face-in-repose is one of thought, activity and involvement -- and thus Western Asians are most likely to have frown and forehead wrinkles than Asian Asians.

- My Emigre subscription, my AIGA membership, and my devotion to k10k have all lapsed during the past year, which I think means that I'm not a full-fledged designer anymore. was what I meant. I was hungry.
Hmmm... personally i am not asian, yet I find both my skin and hair behave totally differently in the US than in Europe. I can also now tell if a photo of my grandfather was taken in Britain (hair standin' straight up) or the US ( lifeless), but I cannot tell if my own facial expressions vary or change...yet.

Much of my life has been spent hunting for the exceptions.
I agree that it's the air but I would like to say it's more your frame of mind and how you deal with issues. While I now reside in the US, I spent my younger years in Asia and I can say that people in the region I grew up in seem happier and more content in general. They also seem less the worrywarts than their Western counterparts seem to be.

Also, the face-in-repose thing is dangerous, since there is great variety in Asia. Japan, like England, is more static faceishness and hidden feelings or doubles. Korea, as I know well, is voraciously passionate and heart-on-sleeve manic-depressive and emotionally dead honest daddy.
That said, there are plenty of ways to identify people by where they've been raised.

I do not buy the theory that American Asian born skin trouble caused by the influence of Western activity. The reason of Asian people's bad skin here in North America is simply the air. I can feel the air here is so dried up that I feel as if my skin is like a piece of paper.
