It's 3 AM and I'm just back from Intermission where Marianne was taking photos of my work for the announcement of my show, which will be November 7th @ 8pm at Propellor on Granville Island. I'll post more info as that day approaches.
The past few days have been spent at my studio, working. It has been gratifying.
I've been reading Portrait of the Artist as a Young Ape by Michel Butor. I don't know why I never thought to read the other nouvelle roman writers. I love Marguerite Duras. I think I wrote the whole group of them off after reading Jealousy by Alain Robbe-Grillet. The Butor, so far, is great. The only reason I'm reading Butor is because I noticed that Lydia Davis had translated one of his books. Which is a kind of a recommendation in itself, seeing has how she did some excellent translations of Blanchot.
In Walter Benjamin at the Dairy Queen, McMurtry writes that he's always studied interviews of writers to find offhand mentions of books he hadn't heard of. I've done the same, and in that manner have been lead to Thomas Bernhard, Stanley Elkin, Denton Welch, Ingeborg Bachmann, Walter Abish, Alfred Jarry, Edmond Jabes, Kobo Abe...There is one person -- the greatest reader that I know personally -- who I wish would start a weblog. (Derek Robinson? Are you listening?)

That's funny, the first 'new novel' I came across was Jealousy, which inspired me to dig deeper. But its no secret why that particular work can be exhausting and irritable (I will explain it to you by first making a list of reasons, which I shall emphasize with a series of marks, perhaps in red ink. I will then rearrange these reasons once again, in a manner that reminds me of something else, and each of these new reasons I will again mark with red ink, or perhaps maroon. After I've examined them from this perspective, I shall begin once again rearranging, remarking, remembering. I shall then arrange these reasons in a slightly different order, and mark them each with red ink, or diagonal scratches, trying to remember why I began making such lists, as one can never be certain from this new perspective.)
But keeping in mind that I empathize with the reader's irritation --even though I truly enjoyed it-- I must say that Robbe-Grillet's post-Jealousy work is where the gems are. I really think he worked out some kinks, and everything from 'In The Labyrinth' to 'Reccolections of the Golden Triangle' are gorgeous, idiosyncratic, masterful works.
Of all the nouveau roman authors, each of whom I hold dear in some manner, I must admit that Butor was my least favorite, though admittedly I've never read Portrait....
Just stumbled onto your blog and I love it. I'll link up to it from mine, which should generate millions of hits daily...
