To celebrate our anniversary, we had dinner last night at Bin 941, the place we'd had our first date in Vancouver. Stewart is at this moment cooking the Roast Chicken and Bread Salad from the Zuni Café Cookbook, the Zuni Café being the place we had our first date in San Francisco.
There is really nothing better to do in this city (and any city) than just wandering around and looking at things. That's what we did today. We had brunch in Yaletown and then wandered around there. Wandered over to a furniture store, wandered over to Main, wandered through a couple bookstores of course, where I bought the following:
• La Fanfarlo by Charles Baudelaire. The story of Baudelaire's own bizarre and tragic relationship with Jeanne Duval is related in this fiction.
• Under the Hill by Aubrey Beardsley. Because the blurb also contained the word "bizarre", and because I'd never known that Beardsley had written a novel.
• Castle to Castle by Louis-Ferdinand Céline. The text is bizarrely punctuated by ellipses. I stood in the bookstore and read through several pages. I also have no idea what happened to the rest of my Céline, so this is a placeholder.
• The Journal of Albion Moonlight by Kenneth Patchen. Until today I'd always thought that Kenneth Koch and Kenneth Patchen were the same person, and I'd always associated them with Rod McKuen. Don't ask me where I got this idea.
• Glottal Stop: 101 Poems by Paul Celan Translated by Nikolai Popov and Heather McHugh. My latest strategy for reading poetry in translation is to read as many different translators as possible and thus triangulate into a sense of the original.
• Grand Street 63 Mostly because there were a series of photographs of the work of Lygia Clark, the Brazilian artist.
And then we sat and read and drank coffee at the Soma café. The delicious chicken is almost ready. Time to set the table!

Can't in LA.
Mike | June 2, 2003 12:59 AMUnder the Hill is indeed bizarre, and rather pornographic in a frothily elegant way. I love Beardsley's prose & only wish he'd written more of it. There is a good on-line edition of the book here.
misteraitch | June 2, 2003 2:19 AMIf you can ever find Patchen's "Sleepers Awake" you must buy it. As an undergrad, I photocopied the whole thing and had it bound. (But don't tell.)
torvil | June 2, 2003 6:44 AMCongratulations on your anniversary!
Despite rumors to the contrary, it gets even better from there. Well, it *can* anyway.
Hope y'all are one of those "lucky couples." Tho luck has nothing to do with it.
Cody | June 2, 2003 7:26 AMAh, but you CAN wander around in San Francisco.
Anthony Baker | June 2, 2003 8:47 AMYou can wander in Portland, Oregon. Most bookstores per capita in the U.S. too!
Emily | June 2, 2003 1:31 PMHappy anniversary, much love to you both, etc... but what I really want to know is, what did Dos Pesos do?
lia | June 2, 2003 5:43 PMI saw Heather McHugh at the last Dodge Poetry Festival here in New Jersey, and remember her to be both funny and thought-provoking.
And Kenneth Koch is (was - sob!) the anti-Rod McKuen.
happy anniversary.
bin 941 rocks. i had a supremely great evening there a few years back.
Alex S | June 4, 2003 11:27 AMThanks to your mention of the Zuni Café Bread Salad, I stumbled across this great food weblog which happened to mention it as well, http://gfh.midgard.org/mt/blogs/appetites. Thought you or some readers might be interested as well. Cheers!
