I absolutely love Frances McDormand, but the Laurel Canyon crew could have done a lot more work on tightening up the script before putting it out there. They also could have cast just about anyone else in the role of the son, who was played by Christian Bale, an actor with so little sex appeal you can hear the whooshing sound of desire leaving the theatre whenever he appears on the screen. The only other thing I'd seen him in was the ill-fated glam-rock flick Velvet Goldmine. As a girl who had a six-foot high poster of Marc Bolan on her wall throughout high school, there was no way I was *not* going to see it, but, damnit, no amount of Ewan McGregor screentime could offset the buzzkill of each Christian Bale appearance.
Though I haven't seen American Psycho, I bet he'd make a suitably repellent serial killer.

American Psycho was on the Indie Film Channel last night in fact, and Bale was perfect in the role precisely because he is, as you say, subtly repellent and further has a somewhat indistinct character about him - which of course was also a trait of the character he played (throughout the book Bateman is mistaken for other people).
It's too bad Mary Harron (if you don't know, ask Stewart who Don Harron, her father, is) directed that POS. If it ruined her career it would be a real shame, cause she showed some promise as a young director, and female directors doing features are few and far between.
Michael | May 12, 2003 5:36 AMGame Neverending? Hmm...sounds very interesting. At least 'semantically.' What exactly is the philosophy of this game and how is it played?

Haynes | May 12, 2003 6:55 AMOh, how I hate Christian Bale. Your post title made me laugh out loud. He's rubbish. Everything I've ever seen him in (and believe me, it's been accidental, as I will never willingly see another movie that has him in it again) has been crap. Velvet Goldmine was a terrible disappointment, but for real laughs, see him in a crappy little film called "All The Little Animals." In fact, just say the title out loud for some giggles.
James | May 12, 2003 8:30 AMIf nothing else, American Psycho underlined/bolded/fontsize500'ed Christian Bale's lack of appeal. Even at first seeing the movie, and before realizing how nasty his character is, I was struck with the thought of 'why would any character find him remotely attractive? I'd even go so far as to say he seems soul-less, as if he was cloned and replaced with some robot.
maia | May 12, 2003 10:22 AMthis is all too funny.
while we're talking fathers-of it should be noted that Christian Bale's dad is married to Gloria a-woman-needs-a-man-like-a-fish-
needs-a-bicycle Steinem, but really, whatever
I think he was suitable for the part, because in the film, as his character says, he's "simply not there." It would be difficult to find someone who has less presence without being invisible.
| May 12, 2003 1:04 PMIt's true that his character was "not there", but I think part of the problem with the script came from its inability to choose whether the Sam/Mother or Sam/Alex relationship was the plot or the subplot.
I still think he needed some steam. The movie opened with a sex scene, and most of the dramatic tension was supposed to derive from the temptation of Sam and Alex's fevered interactions with the Israeli Doctor and the British Rock Star, respectively. Bale needed to provide at least a shiver of heat -- how else could he have attracted the Doctor? -- but he was as cold as day-old french fries.
There are plenty of bland-but-sexy leading men out there. Kevin Costner being the prime example. Not that I find him sexy. But at least he can generate some heat.
Caterina | May 12, 2003 2:41 PMYou are right. Kevin Costner can provide less presence while still generating some screen heat.
andrew | May 13, 2003 6:02 AMi thought he was alright in shaft and that dragon movie :D and he was pretty cool in equilibrium!
| May 13, 2003 9:00 AMHonestly, Frances McDormand was so hot (in her 40s!) that Christian Bale's shortcomings faded into the background. Call me shallow.
Christian Bale started as a child actor. See K.B.'s 'Henry the V'.
hjarten | May 14, 2003 8:59 PMPool, Frances McDormand is Hot Hot Hot! Go out and buy the latest copy of Bust which has more sexy pictures of her.
(Lia told me about it.)
RRrrrrwowr!
Caterina | May 15, 2003 12:44 PMCount me as another Laurel Canyon viewer who started taking off stars every time Frances McDormand left the screen and adding them back on every time she returned.
Bale's character wasn't the only dull one given too much prominence. The daughter-in-law was easy on the eyes but completely bland. We sort of had to take the plot's word for it that she was smart, attractive, etc. because she never showed it. And McDormand's young rock&roller love interest, while strictly a background character, seemed like he had a story and a personality that merited more screen time.
Now, about Bust: I'm tempted to run out and buy copies for my sister and the other 40+ women in my life, but I can't tell from the website whether the mag is more aimed at women who want to be Frances McDormand or women who want to lust after Frances McDormand. "Not that there's anything wrong with that," as they say, but the particular women I have in mind are not particularly in touch with their inner lesbian. Can anyone offer guidance on this delicate matter?
Prentiss Riddle | May 19, 2003 3:46 PMBust, while lesbian-supportive, is not a lesbian magazine, and this is a particularly good issue for the 40+ crowd, as it is the "age issue" and has articles about a bunch of rad chix of all ages who either have it going on, know where it's going on, or could find out where it was going on if someone asked. McDormand, Yoko Ono, and Chrissie Hynde all appear.
Caterina | May 19, 2003 9:53 PMSurprised to come across your weblog here. Bale is absolute scum. I'm not talking about his wooden acting. As a person, he personally sabotaged a number of his own movies because he's too high and mighty to do any publicity for them. Just look at his box office track record. He's now box-office poison and his much touted Internet following has evaporated. His child actor 5 minutes is waay over.
GreenSleeves | June 27, 2003 11:18 AMHey, I'd just like to say that Christian Bale is a briliant actor. He took on the very complex part of Patrick and played it superbly. To be honest, he's a hard core actor that really appreciates the art, not some Jennifer Lopez person who thinks that wiggling your bum at the camera constitutes an oscar. Anyway, i'm proud of actors like Johnny Depp and Christian who stay out the limelight. I mean, who wants to read about someone day after day when there are much more important things going on around the world. Films should sto pbeing one big press relase to boost someone's earnings, and get back to what they should be, hard core acting.
Katie | November 26, 2003 1:52 PMI have adored Christian Bale since "Newsies" and in that movie his acting was SUPERB!! I don't care if one movie is not great because it's never just about the actor. He has showed excellent acting in other movies - Shaft was great. American Psycho was just freaky. If he was put into parts that the character had depth he would be awesome.
