Bookworms



Last year I read something in the neighborhood of 105 books, averaging 2 books a week, which is nothing compared to the number of books read last year by America's biggest readers, though lot of them seem to be reading pulp. Except Condoleeza Rice. Condoleeza Rice has read War and Peace in Russian.

105 books is pretty darn good!  I will go for a month without reading normal stuff (not my dry mathamtics/physics/programming textbooks) and then I'll pick up a good book and will finish it in 3 days.  I have trouble remembering it if I don't read it basiclly all at once.

I average about 4 or 5 books a week when I'm working, slightly more when I'm not. I admit that most of this is contemporary fiction, but it's not pulp. (er, apart from the chunks of mystery novels.) I think it has a lot to do with having no television: I have time to read which doesn't vanish in front of the screen.

I'd be interested in learning how the Web has impacted reading habits. I suspect overall it's probably increased the time the average person spends in front of text, while luring serious readers away from print (and aggressive book-reading) to a degree. Which has pros (instant, free access to a whole world of ideas and imagination and opinion previously out of reach) and cons (we spend a hell of a lot of time digesting second-hand puree of what we once consumed whole).

I also find my reading (both "quality" and quantity) varies considerably with the seasons (and the weather). Amazing how many more books I tend to read when the sky is grey and weeping. Also, the books tend to be "weepers" as well...

War and Peace in Russian is not much of an accomplishment.  I would be more impressed if she'd read Belyj's Peterburg or Sologub or something.  It doesn't surprise me that James Billington is in the top ten, though.



I wish I could manage two books a week.  I ended up at something like 45 books for the year last year, but hopefully that will increase this year with the increase in my ability to read faster in Russian.  :-)

No point in reading that much. What's important is the quality of what you read and the time you take over each book. Devouring books at such a rate is a form of neurosis, and part and parcel of  our awful consumer society lifestyle, in which everything is done in a hurry. Why not try to live in a more natural way?

There's a -huge- point in reading that much, if it's a real pleasure, a deep pleasure. Why spend all that time reading if there's no joy in it? If it's neurotic to spend several hours a day reading, then long live neurosis.



And reading fast does not mean that you're skimming. I sometimes get a bit cross with people who tell me I can't possibly appreciate the things I read, because I read fast, and because I read a great deal. 



There are some brain theory boffins who believe that fast reading is more natural and increases comprehension and retention. (In a spot of nice timing, there was a piece about this on BBC Radio 4's 'open book' programme this weekend.)

Books are like chocolate: there is no such thing as too much or too many. Also, like chocolate, it is possible to eat endless quantities without deleterious effect. ;)

Why so many negative comments. And what's with the strange insistance that if you read 2 or more books a week they must be pulp?



I read 2-3 books a week and still have time for the rest of my life. I read mostly 'non-pulp' fiction and serious nonfiction. I've just decided that reading and the life of the mind are more important than tv, so I've opted out of tv and pop-culture altogether..And gee does my brain feel good.

I want to know- what to name it? What name would draw you inside knowing you would find only the best classics and new books?  I want it to be a beautiful garden of books to escape in.
