My New Computer

Stewart's not the only one who got fancy new things today. I went down to the Apple store and picked up a new Titanium Powerbook, which I'm very excited about. My Dell laptop was rendered completely unusable when I passworded the damned thing and promptly forgot the password. I'd never passworded that computer before. What was I thinking? In any event, I live in a wireless house, but haven't been mobile for a year and a half. Joy!

Woobaby, the old Pyra Mac, has been sending out those I'm going to die soon signals, so it was time to back her up and replace her. Apple souped up the new 12" and 17" PowerBooks, but not the 15". The guy at the store said there was no plan to ship new configurations of the 15" any time soon.

Welcome back to the Mac, Caterina. If you wanted to go through the website, you could probably get a custom configuration.

Very nice! Welcome home. You'll enjoy OS X.

What do the "I'm going to die soon" messages look or sound like? I think my old g3 powerbook's sending them out, but I've been trying to mishear them for a while... Congratulations on the new computer!

"I'm going to die soon" messages include:

- strange sounds
- inexplicable crashes
- font weirdnesses
and any kind of finder problems at all -- folders not moving to where you tell them to go, or not moving at all, or disappearing; being unable to click windows in different programs....etc.

I think I may copy Woobaby, and then wipe her and start from scratch. She's still a good computer, and has served me well for three years now.

Um, have you tried clearing your Parameter RAM? (Cmd-Opt-PR on startup until three chimes have rung) Or rebuilding your Desktop? (Cmd-Opt after startup chime until dialog comes up)

If you do this on an OS9 box, that may do the trick. You will have to reset your time zone, clock, keyboard settings, and sound, and you may lose your file comments, if you use them.
